Advent 2022: Sermon Series at Cross-Way
The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming,” which translates to the Greek word parousia.
“The celebration of Advent is possible only …to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, and who look forward to something greater to come.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The Series Title: Waiting… (in Christian Life)
The Bible has many examples of God’s people waiting on him to bring his salvation, on the promises he has made for their deliverance. Salvation is not an act of decision at one point, nor is it just about the present experience. The scope of YHWH’s salvation is more about the past and about the future, with full bearing on the present as well. In fact present is too short of a time to fully experience fullness of God’s salvation. The prophets remind us about the Lord’s acts and powers in the past to point to the future promises of his salvation.
Every patriarch receiving God’s promise of salvation and Covenant waited upon Him. Adam and Eve waited for Gen 3:15 to be fulfilled. Abraham waited for the Covenant to be fulfilled
Joseph waited 2 years in prison, condemned without reason without verdict (future) and 14 years for the family and the Lord’s deliverance. Israel waited more than 400 years in Egypt, again 40 years in the wilderness. Israel waited 700 years after Isaiah prophesied the coming of Immanuel. Mary waited 9 months, and the new Israel 33 years. We have waited 2000 years for the second coming of Christ. How should the waiting shape our understanding of God’s salvation and our character as Christians? The series will explore these themes in the next 4-weeks until Christmas day.
The birth of Jesus is fully orbed salvation- culmination of the past promises and prophecies into the present, and proclamations of the Lord’s coming and bringing salvation to Israel of the first century ANE, and promises of God’s salvation to the church and the future generations to come. This means there’s much patience required in the present, thus the essence of realized salvation is in the waiting.[+] Show More

Sabbath is an underlying theme for us as a church, and going through it at least once in a year is necessary. Sabbath was intended to …create grateful people and a community. The whole purpose of Creation and Law was to ensure people who come before God with gratitude (ritualistically, habitually, routinely) so as to ensure life centered around God, His presence and mission in the world. This series will focus on how Sabbath (worship and rest at least once a week) was intended to bring people back into their created focus- living before God for the sake of their neighbors. This focus is necessary, because the world- our lives, families, society, nation and world in its default culture tends to run away from God-centered lives to self-centered, consumer driven culture.
Thanksgiving is a harvest season, where the fruit of our labors (fields or factories, friends and family) are signs of God’s provision. World and everything in it is so much more than what we could’ve created for ourselves or control with our knowledge and resources. This season is a reminder that God is in control and we are grateful recipients; and as grateful recipients we live with our hands open in response to enjoy, but also to share and give towards what makes our neighbors and others in our reach to flourish.[+] Show More

Goal: We will move from Resurrection as believed and claimed theology …
Goal: We will move from Resurrection as believed and claimed theology to life’s practices.
Resurrection is the central event of Christian life. It’s narratives both in history when Jesus was raised …from the dead, but also in our own lives need defining and re-imagining for real life habits and cultural practices. If death is the ultimate enemy that has it’s grip over our lives, resurrection (of Jesus and therefore ours) sets us free, free enough for us to imagine God’s Kingdom here and now in our lives.
Need: We are bound to our own “business as usual” and distracted by our lives’ demands on us, keeping too busy to “create, make [manufacture] and control” that we’ve kept ourselves preoccupied leaving hardly any room for the wonderment, deeper meaning and at the mysteries of resurrection.
Resurrection is often presented as something to be argued, debated, proven and believed. While those are necessary about Resurrection, and have served the cause of Truth claims. But, through the narratives of the first Easter day, the events and persons, we learn resurrection is meant to be carried out into practices of our daily lives, more than cognitively believed, just as Jesus exemplified it’s meaning in his life. This sermon series will focus on the practices that Resurrection demands from us, as believers in Jesus, baptized into his death and resurrection.
